Since 1989, Racers Edge has been more than just an outdoor store, it’s been a place where people connect, gear up, and launch into adventures big and small. Founded by 'Shaker' and Diana Schikker, Racers Edge started with a simple idea: A love for the outdoors and the need find something warmer to do in winter than mustering sheep. But what it grew into was something far greater: a cornerstone of the Wānaka community.
Over the years, Racers Edge joined the R&R Sport family, and later became part of Torpedo7. But in 2024, it came full circle, returning to its roots as a proudly local, independent business. At the helm? The same passionate crew who helped shape it, including Shaker and Diana, Mat Woods, and Charles Cochrane.

Shaker & Diana Schikker: From Sheep Trails to Ski Trails
Shaker’s path into the outdoor industry was more rural than retail. “I grew up on a farm at the base of Mt Hutt ski field,” he says. “I arrived in Wānaka as a shepherd in 1984 to work up the Matukituki Valley at Mt Aspiring Station. I guess I’ve always been involved in the outdoor industry, only chasing sheep, not skiers.”
When winter rolled around and farm work slowed, a job in a ski shop sounded like a smart (and warm) idea. One thing led to another, and in 1989, Shaker and Dianna purchased both the business and the building that Racers Edge still calls home.
Decades later, they’ve built a business where people come first. As Shaker puts it:
“It’s the health of the business, not necessarily the wealth of the business. That health is largely influenced by the people who work in the business. These people become part of the ‘Racers Edge family’ for the time they are here. We care for them, we love watching the friendships they make, and we enjoy their excitement about being in Wānaka and part of the NZ ski industry.”
Looking back, it’s clear how deeply rooted their love of Wānaka is. “Recently looking through old photo albums made me realise how incredibly fortunate as a family we have been to live, work and play in Wānaka. Every adventure has been memorable, whether it’s a BBQ on the beach or heli-skiing, it’s all been a blast.”
Even now, their passion for exploration is strong. These days, it’s off-road caravanning with e-bikes and tennis rackets in tow. But the energy and vision they brought to Racers Edge still shapes everything the store does today.

Mat Woods: Retail Roots and Lawn Mower Misadventures
Mat Woods came to Racers Edge by way of R&R Sport, where he once sold second-hand skis to pay the bills. One thing led to another, and before long, he’d become a shareholder and helped grow the company to ten stores nationwide. When R&R was sold in 2013, Matt saw a chance to finally do what he’d always wanted, join the Wānaka scene.
“We always wanted a store in Wānaka,” he says. “We had huge respect for Racers Edge, their passionate staff, loyal customers, and great service. We didn’t want to go head-to-head. Then opportunity knocked, and we were lucky enough to team up with these legends.”
Mat’s business philosophy is simple:
“It really comes down to people. The team, our families, our suppliers, and the people who rely on our expert advice. This is our extended family, our whānau.”
He’s had his fair share of outdoor exploits, including racing the inaugural five-day Godzone Adventure Race from Milford Sound to Queenstown. But not all his standout moments involve maps and mountains.
Ask him for a memory from Racers Edge and he doesn’t hesitate: “That time Shaker drove a ride-on lawn mower into my lounge.”

Charles Cochrane: Gear Geek, Snow Rep, and Family Adventurer
Charles joined the Racers Edge crew after years working as a wholesale rep for major ski brands like Volkl and Tecnica. One of his top accounts? You guessed it, Racers Edge. “Shaker and I had a great relationship,” he says. “I was drawn to the business because of the people, the product, and the Wānaka playground.”
Today, Charles juggles business ownership with skiing, biking, and trail missions with his wife and two young kids. His values are simple but powerful: “It’s all about the people. Make it fun, and follow your dreams.”
He’s also got big ideas brewing for the future: “The Billy is always simmering away. Watch this space.”

So, What Makes Racers Edge Special?
Ask any of the founders and they’ll all say the same thing: it’s about the people. The staff, the community, and the customers who walk in the door stoked to get outside. “Apart from our warm local welcoming,” says Matt, “it comes down to understanding how important it is to get outside and play. In order to be your best self, it’s important to make time for that.”
As Racers Edge steps into its next chapter, the team is fired up. Wānaka’s population is growing, the trails are expanding, and new gear tech is changing the game. But through it all, one thing hasn’t changed: the value of real advice, from real people who live and breathe the outdoors.
As Shaker says:
“Racers Edge has been great for our family in Wānaka. A great conduit to the community. It’s allowed us to fully appreciate and immerse ourselves in Wānaka and the opportunities available.”
And as always:
"Always evolving. Always thinking."
Whether it’s your first boot fitting, your next powder mission, or just a friendly chat with someone who knows the terrain, Racers Edge is here to help you get the most out of life.
