WANAKA BIKE TRAILS

Take a look at the local trails using the Trailforks interactive map via Bike Wanaka.

We are lucky to have great riding of different types direct from town. No real need to drive anywhere. Just get on your bike.

For single track visit Sticky Forest for some short hit fun, or get on the Hikuwai Loop and Deans Bank tracks for some enjoyable local experiences. Longer trails along the lake edge take you to Glendhu Bay and further afield in a westerly direction, or out to Lake Hawea and its lakefront track towards the East or Luggate heading more South. It’s all shown on the Trailforks map above.

Here are a selection of our favourites, or contact Wanaka Bike Tours for guided Wanaka mountain bike tours.

  • 1. THE PLANTATION

(Including Sticky Forest) This fun network of trails makes the best of exotic pine forest in Wanaka township. There are over 30 tracks to choose from; from the technical switchbacks of Stumpy and The Grove, to the beautiful berms of Venus and Bilantis, to Crankin’ Fine’s legendary uphill switchback and ‘Must stop’ look out bench. These trails are expertly designed to be enjoyed by beginners and pros alike.

  • 2. THE HIKUWAI LOOP

(Incorporating Fuzzy Nuts and Hairy Bush) A great way to link a ride from Albert Town to Sticky Forest and back again, this single track starts in the Manuka Flats of the Hikuwai Reserve, takes you for a rooty ride through the forest and spits you out onto the Outlet Camp before returning you to Albert along and above the river. A beauty.

  • 3. THE MILLENIUM TRACK

Beautiful walking and cycling track skirting a cliff top above the shores of Lake Wanaka – an intermediate ride with views you’ll never forget. Starts at Waterfall Creek culminating at Glendhu Bay. From the shop to Glendhu is about 1:15min of brisk pedalling.

  • 4. LISMORE JUMP PARK

This facility includes a beginner skills area, a new flow/pump track, various dirt tabletops and features, plus a (really) full-on jump line and two pump tracks one for the tiny kids…

  • 5. THE HAWEA RIVER TRACK

Access after the Albert town bridge on the right, this is a 10km bike trail following the Hawea River from Albert town to Lake Hawea. Easy grade, beautifully scenic for either mountain biking or commuting. Also provides access to other trails around the Hawea Region.

  • 6. GLADSTONE TRACK

Opened in 2012 it starts directly opposite the Hawea Hotel weaving its way along the lake shore to finish at Johns Creek where the metal road to Timaru creek can be joined.

  • 7. WEST WANAKA/MT ALTA

Access past Glendu Bay and take signs to West Wanaka off the Aspiring main road on to the gravel. Take the marked ‘West Wanaka Road’ from the DOC carpark to culminate at Colquhouns Beach / Cattle Flat with an optional (though brutal) extension if desired up the steep switch backs above and beyond… Retreat the way you came or arrange for floating vessel extraction for the complete adventure. The trail is exposed to the weather so make sure and be prepared.

  • 8. UPPER CLUTHA RIVER TRACK

An amazing track. From the Albert Town DOC parking ground on the Cardrona River at Pawson’s Crossing this track leads you downstream to Luggate, taking in the twists in the Clutha and fantastic views. Carry on past the small carpark and enjoy the new addition to this track which takes you to ‘The Devils Elbow’ and ultimately, if you so desire, The Luggate Pub. (Approx 16km)

  • 9. NEWCASTLE TRACK

Opened in 2012 this is the perfect link for the Upper Clutha River Track to create a wonderful loop. Beginning at the swing bridge on the Hawea River Track, this goes down the left downstream bank of the river emerging at a DOC carpark just north of the Red Bridge. Ridden either way, combined with the Upper Clutha Track this is a great 28km combined ride which takes in so much of the environment and can, if so desired, be combined with a halfway stopover at the Luggate Pub (approx 35km loop).

  • 10. DEANS BANK TRACK

A XC track on which the Wanaka 10hour race is run in October each year. Very entertaining and varied suitable for every level of rider. Starting at the Albert Town campground the track follows a 11km loop taking you to the Lake Wanaka outlet before doubling back thru the forest. A staple of local riders amusement.
