SNOW
Where Is Shaker (or Charlie)?
Shaker will be either in the Saddle at Treble Cone or "powdering his nose" care of Harris Mountains Heli-skiing. Charlie will be on the phone or/and sorting "an amazing deal."
Where should I ski?
If you're on your first ski holiday or with the family, head to Cardrona Alpine Resort. Cardrona is famous for its amazing family facilities, open terrain and the best freestyle park around for those who have no respect for their edges, are equally at home riding both ways or want to hit some massive kickers and challenge their freestyle riding.
Treble Cone is for the more adventurous spirits who know how to finish a turn (Pffftt…) or for those who seek the most varied terrain and the deepest snow in NZ.
Snowfarm rounds it out nicely for a most amazing day of solitude, fun and the best aerobic workout the mountains can deliver.
How far is it to the ski fields?
All are about 40 minutes' drive from Racers Edge although Shaker and Diana in a Nissan Bluebird set the pace a few years ago at a cracking 21 minutes. Apparently…
What do I do if my ski boots hurt?
It happens! It can depend on your fitness, the shell fit and the snow conditions, but usually the Wanaka boot fitters at Racers Edge can find a simple solution. There are a myriad of minute adjustments that can be made to produce a comfortable boot fit. The first step is onto our custom footbed machine – a must.
Should I ski with goggles or glasses?
Goggles are best for warmth and expanded vision on low light days and - of course - so much better if you bail. Glasses for the sun deck or the bluebird spring day. Kids – goggles every time.
Sport ski hire or performance ski rental?
Performance rental skis are usually new season's skis chosen off the retail rack to enhance even the most tentative skier’s performance. Skiers can choose to rent the best of the best or have one of our trained rental technicians make a recommendation.
Sport rental skis are renewed every couple of years. They are generally rental specific and designed to offer a medium level of performance and be durable.
How do I keep warm on the mountain?
Get layered. We do. Dump the cotton skivvies and grab a Merino or two. Choose an Icebreaker or Mons Royale.
A waterproof and windproof shell, plus insulated jackets and pants are a must. Mittens keep kids' hands warmer than gloves.
Helmets are safe and warm. Neck-warmers and buffs do the business, and specific ski socks enhance warmth and comfort.
Do I have to be "good" to go heli-skiing?
Shaker is the man to answer this one: “The best thing you can do in the mountains with your pants on!”
Harris Mountains Heli-Skiing, with its office right in Racers Edge, has the experience and the terrain to give you a magical day in the mountains. This fully guided and catered service has operated since the 1980s. If you can make a reasonable turn on any ski resort, you can heli-ski.
Do I need to pre-book my ski rental?
